The Queensland Eye Institute relies heavily on community support to carry out its sight saving research.
Based on the results of a recent National Health Survey, over 9 million or one in every two Australians suffer from at least one sight problem.
Vision impairment and blindness are among the major causes of disability.
Approximately 116,000 people present to hospitals or their doctor each year with unintentional eye injuries.
Prevention of avoidable childhood blindness is particularly important because of the severity of implications for child development.
After the age of 40 the amount of visual impairment and blindness increases threefold with each decade of age, meaning that after 40 it is extremely important to have dilated eye examinations every two years.
The World Health Organisation estimates that 80% of blindness around the world is preventable or treatable. It is our mission to provide world-class clinical care to make this a reality. We will continue our research into debilitating eye conditions in the hope of preventing 100% of blindness.
Currently there are over half a million Australians who have low vision or are legally blind due to preventable conditions like macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetes.
It is estimated that every week approximately 300 people will lose their quality of life due to a preventable condition. These are horrible statistics as so many of these conditions are preventable here and now because of the work of the Queensland Eye Institute.
By supporting the Queensland Eye Institute Foundation you can be an important part of our sight-saving achievements. We ask if you would give consideration to showing your support by:
