Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) are an important component of all research involving humans in Australia and are the Australian equivalent of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) in the USA.
The Queensland Eye Institute has established an independent, National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) registered HREC, which focuses on the needs of researchers and sponsors seeking to undertake ophthalmology clinical trials and translational vision research in Australia.
Any human research that is conducted at the Queensland Eye Institute or for which QEI is responsible, must be designed and conducted in accordance with:
Applications are first submitted to the Scientific Committee (SC) before being submitted to the HREC. Following HREC review, other legal administrative and financial documents will be assessed by the Research Governance Office (RGO).
