Professor Chirila has over 30 years experience in the fields of organic chemistry, polymer science and biomaterials. Since the 1980s, his activity has resulted in valuable contributions to several areas of biomaterials, polymer science and bioengineering, especially in the understanding of biomaterials and biocompatibility, in the development of polymers for intraocular implants, radiation-absorbing polymers, hydrogels and hydrophilic sponges, artificial cornea, artificial vitreous substitutes, and in topics such as chemistry and characterisation of acrylic hydrogels, interaction of laser radiation with polymers, photoresponsive polymers, sustained release of bioactive agents, tissue engineering, the use of polymers in genetic therapies, and the history of ophthalmology. He is the acknowledged inventor of AlphaCor™, an artificial cornea in worldwide current clinical use. His activity has resulted to date in 140 articles and book chapters, and 13 patents. He also presented over 140 communications at scientific meetings, and lectured as a visiting professor/scientist in China, USA, Japan, Romania, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Korea. Since 1987, he has obtained 30 research grants totalling over  A$ 12 million. He is on the editorial boards of 6 scientific journals. He held honorary professorships with University of Western Australia and Curtin University of Technology, in Perth, and currently holds professorships with Queensland University of Technology and University of Queensland (at both Australian Institute for Bioengineering & Nanotechnology and Faculty of Health Sciences), in Brisbane. Professor Chirila has received the RACI Polymer Division Citation in 1993 and the RACI Applied Research Medal in 1999.
